Carl Zimmer discusses his book on E. Coli and there are some interesting historical pieces in this first podcast. I recently went to a talk that discuss the possibility of “kissing” developing to pass useful bacteria back and forth between people and I was reminded of this when I listened to this podcast. Certainly, we have gained much knowledge from studying more simple species and learning how genes are activated, deactivated, and passed from one cell to another.
The article is very good. I also read another article on advaced biotechnology. It talks about Ecoli being used for generating biodiesel. Check it out

Thanks for sharing… I always am a bit skeptical of any energy source other than wind, tidal, or solar. The technology is always fascinating though.
Can you imagine the number of specialists required to study the “complete solution” of every living organism? Do you think YOU could stand a life of studying nothing but one specific species? Will generalists have any function in the future? It’s an exciting time to be alive! So much to learn. It’s a scary time! Gotta pick your specialty. And boy can it get specific!
