Whenever I hear people talk about global warming it makes me cringe. Someone will mention how cold it has been in Michigan and make some comment like, “if someone thinks there is global warming, they should live here!”. This drives me nuts because it takes a single data point and assumes that it represents the world as a whole. I am not saying that I can wrap my mind around global climate change, but I certainly understand that we do indeed pollute as a species. Pollution can be quantified and we know it has effects on organisms.
When I listened to the Scientific American podcast on the human impact on oceans, it made me think of the cold weather analogy I mentioned above. One person not catching fish or getting “skunked” doesn’t constitute global ocean changes; BUT these scientists are trying to study an enormous ecosystem. This is a difficult task because they have to sift through all information available.
Both of these problems, global climate and ocean change, truly are overwhelming issues. What I don’t understand is why people struggle with whether or not pollution contributes to either. Whether it does or doesn’t contribute, we know pollution has local impacts – couldn’t this translate to global impacts? Do you think these are just hoaxes?
i think even calling it ‘global warming’ is a misnomer. more accurately we should refer to it as ‘climate change’. i say this because while the overall temps may be warminig, the real effect on the ground means for more extreme weather conditions. bigger storms, longer droughts, colder freezes and more snow, more floods, etc. climate change means more of everything, not just warming.
This is what I have read as well; it is pretty typical for a person to take one cold day or one warm day and use it as “evidence” for a global change. This always makes me laugh too.
i like the global warming i am sick of it to what i dont like is people who talk about global warming usually have no science education at all and they dont know what to think bacause they are waiting to have someone tell them what to think and science always gets knocked on for not being 100 percent right i hate when people talk bad about nasa to science is a new frontier and if the world does become screwed up more than it already is then i would be happy to look to the scientist to save my life rather than the government full of people out for themselves science is an art form and is full of people who do their best to be honest about us they rarely get anything out of being right or out of being wrong thay are the people who actually know about global warming besides are government will play like they didnt know like all things in history but you cant control mother nature she does what she wants wether all of us little humans like it or not
